Amid declining sales following a boycott caused by its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, Bud Light has donated $200,000 to an initiative that supports LGBT-run businesses.
In a May 30 press release, the St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch – which brews Bud Light – announced the donation to the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). The $200,000 will go to the NGLCC’s Communities of Color Initiative (CoCI) which is “designed to support the growth and success of minority LGBT-owned businesses through certification, scholarships and business development in an effort to create equal opportunities for the economic advancement of small businesses in the LGBT community.”
Aside from this, the press release also stated that Bud Light will support the NGLCC’s first-ever CoCI Biz Pitch program. “The winning minority LGBT business owner will receive $5,000 and have the chance to go on to compete at the 2023 NGLCC International Business & Leadership Conference LGBT Biz Pitch Competition for $50,000 in cash and prizes,” it said.
“Bud Light was brewed to be an ‘Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy’ beer for everyone 21 [years old and up], and that still holds true today,” Anheuser-Busch said. “We look forward to extending our work with the NGLCC to continue making a positive impact on the LGBT businesses that play a critical role in bringing people everywhere, together.”
Meanwhile, the NGLCC said it was “honored to continue our partnership with Bud Light in support of LGBT businesses. We appreciate the brand’s ongoing efforts to bolster [the] CoCI that empowers and supports both minority LGBT business owners and entrepreneurs, as well as the vital roles they play in communities across the United States.”
According to the press release, Anheuser-Busch has a “strong track record of industry leadership in supporting the LGBT community.” It cited the more than $13 million it has contributed “to local and national non-profit organizations that are committed to advocating for LGBT equality” for the past two decades. The $200,000 donation adds to that total amount, Breitbart pointed out.
The news of the donation followed the aftermath of a boycott against the beer brand launched on April 1. Conservatives who were once the target market of Bud Light turned their backs on the brew after it partnered with Mulvaney. The transgender activist proudly posted a Bud Light can that had his likeness on it, purportedly as a celebration of his “365 days of womanhood.”
Several personalities publicly denounced the beer since then, and many others followed suit. This caused Bud Light to suffer from negative profits and even prompted it to buy back unsold beer nearing expiry. But it appears that the brand hasn’t learned its lesson of not alienating its customer base, as it is set to sponsor several Pride parades scheduled in June.
The Daily Wire‘s Spencer Lindquist reported that Bud Light, and by extension Anheuser-Busch, is listed as a major sponsor in at least three Pride marches. (Related: Bud Light to sponsor pride parades despite ongoing boycott.)
The beer brand is listed as a sponsor of the Cincinnati Pride Parade, alongside Planned Parenthood and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. It is also listed as a “presenting sponsor” of the St. Louis Pride Parade, to be held at Anheuser-Busch’s home city.
Moreover, Bud Light is also listed as a “diamond sponsor” of Stonewall Columbus. The group is responsible for organizing the annual Pride Parade at the city of Columbus in Ohio.
Aside from Bud Light, other Anheuser-Busch products are also listed as sponsors for LGBT gatherings in different cities. Corona and Corona Hard Seltzer are listed as sponsors of the upcoming Los Angeles Pride Parade. Meanwhile, Cutwater Spirits is listed as a sponsor of the 2023 Chicago Pride Fest scheduled a week before the Windy City’s Pride Parade.
